I'm going to assume that you would like to shape the entire edge to a 45 degree angle. If you were to use the router in a table, the fence of the table could be used to guide the cut. However, since you are using a hand held router you'll need a template. The template can simply be a long, straight strip of plywood or MDF secured to the workpiece with clamps or double-sided tape. I recommend Amana Tool no.49402. The guide bearing on the end of the bit will follow the template and create the 45 degree angle.
