Raised Panel Doors for a Linen Press

I'm currently working on a linen press and I'm considering my options to make my raised panel doors. I have decided on the traditional pattern and noticed that I can rout these either with a vertical or a horizontal raised panel bit. I have a 2.25 HP router and was wondering if it would be better for me to use the vertical router bit. Also, is it more difficult to obtain good cuts with a vertical compared to a horizontal raised panel bit. If it is it may be best for me to borrow a friend's 3 HP router.

I look forward to your reply and I always admire the work that you present in the different woodworking magazines.

I much prefer the horizontal panel cutters, such as the Amana Tool Raised Panel Router Bit - Tool No.54117, to the vertical panel bits. The reason is the cutting geometry. Larger diameter bits have a greater cutting angle than those of a smaller diameter. The increased cutting angle shears the wood much cleaner.

To provide a barrier between your hands and the router bit I suggest the PaneLoc guard. Besides increasing safety the PaneLoc also works as a hold-down to keep the panel firmly against the table as you route.
